Decarbonizing Healthcare Logistics: Why Sustainable Supply Chains Are the Next Competitive Frontier

From Targets to Transformation

Ambition without metrics is aspiration. Transformation requires measurable action. In 2025, DKSH achieved a 65% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions (market-based) compared with our 2020 baseline. Our near-term and long-term climate targets were validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reinforcing our alignment with climate science and our commitment to net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2050.

By 2030, we aim to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 71.2% and significantly reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity. These commitments are influencing how we redesign routes, optimize load planning, electrify fleets, expand renewable electricity use, and improve energy efficiency across distribution centers.

Reinventing Cold-Chain Sustainability

Healthcare supply chains are inherently complex, especially in temperature-controlled environments where compliance is non-negotiable. Since 2019, DKSH has introduced more than 13,000 reusable cold-chain temperature-controlled boxes across eight markets, replacing single-use styrofoam packaging. In Thailand alone, 82% of cold-chain orders now utilize reusable packaging. A Life Cycle Assessment confirmed that this transition avoided more than 1.8 million kg of CO₂e over five years compared with single-use alternatives.

This initiative demonstrates the crucial truth that sustainability and performance can coexist. Pharmaceutical compliance, cost optimization, and carbon reduction do not have to compete. They can reinforce one another.

Embedding Sustainability Across the Value Chain

A sustainable supply chain cannot operate in isolation. It requires ecosystem alignment. In 2025, DKSH expanded ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications to seven markets, strengthening environmental management and occupational health and safety standards. Our Supply Chain Management function now maintains 38 certified distribution centers globally. We have also strengthened human-rights due-diligence processes across our value chain, reinforcing accountability, transparency, and responsible procurement practices. Sustainability extends beyond emissions. It encompasses governance, integrity, resilience, and trust.

A Strategic Mindset Shift

Regulatory frameworks, such as GRI, TCFD, and evolving sustainability reporting standards, are shaping expectations. They create important transparency. However, regulation should be the baseline, not ambition.

The real transformation begins, when sustainability becomes a leadership mindset.
When supply-chain leaders view decarbonization not as cost, but as risk mitigation.
When operational efficiency becomes climate strategy.
When procurement becomes partnership.
When sustainability moves from annual reporting into daily decision-making.
